There are a few areas in New York City where I think kids can enjoy the sights best.  The Mayflower Hotel on Central Park West is across the street from Central Park - a perfect place to have a picnic, climb rocks and take a horse, carriage ride, and visit the mini zoo.  It's also a short taxi ride away to the Theater district, Lincoln Center, History Museum, the Met where a visit is a great experiences for a young person.  The Holiday Inn in China Town is an alternative scene where you can explore the street markets and walk to the galleries in Soho.  I also like the Crowne Plaza near Grand Central which is close to the Westchester and Connecticut trains if you want to take a day trip out of the city.  All of these hotels are tastefully decorated, clean and quiet.
